SYNOPSIS
SIT DOWN AND EAT BEFORE OUR LOVE GETS COLD is a funny and moving intimate three-character musical set in New York City, exploring the subjects of friendship, love, fear of intimacy and other complications of contemporary relationships. The show revolves around Abby, a songwriter, her best friend Sue, and Josh, the handsome lawyer who gravitates from one woman to the other, threatening their lifelong friendship.
The story begins in Sue’s dress shop where Abby vents to Sue about Abby’s ex-boyfriend Chip, who recently dumped her. Sue shares her own concerns about how distant Josh has been acting lately, and invites Abby to join them at their favorite cafe. By the time Abby arrives, Josh has broken up with Sue, and it quickly becomes clear that Josh has now set his sights on Abby, whom he follows out of the cafe. Despite their intense mutual attraction, Abby refuses to go out with him, out of loyalty to her friend.
However, later that week Abby finds an excuse to drop by Josh’s office, and by the time she leaves, they’ve made a date. Sue phones Abby and leaves a number of messages, but Abby doesn’t return her calls. After many days, Abby confesses she’s seeing Josh. Sue is devastated but pretends not to care.
Abby falls head over heels for Josh, becoming very dependent, which suddenly makes him retreat. She doesn’t hear from Josh for weeks, and braces herself for his formal break-up speech. However, Josh returns wanting to work things out. After a heated argument, Abby promises to be more independent and Josh resolves to be more emotionally available. They make plans to meet at Josh’s apartment, later that night.
Abby stops by Sue’s shop on the way to a song audition. They finally have it out, and a lifelong friendship hangs in the balance. But with so much at stake, the women acknowledge their friendship is too meaningful and too precious to lose.
The musical is through composed, comprised of book songs, musicalized scenes and comedic revue-style numbers that Abby is inspired to write, as the events of the story unfold.
