Synopsis

Naomi returns home to insular, close-minded Bethlehem after ten years in hated Moab. Her husband and sons are dead, and she brings with her a Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth. They struggle against prejudice and a patriarchal system that, without a male heir, would strip Naomi of her land and family heritage. Their only hope is for a relative to marry Ruth and produce a son with her - a ‘kinsman redeemer”. The closest kinsman is wicked, miserly Uncle Nemuel, who only wants the land. The kinsman who truly loves Ruth is painfully shy, slow moving cousin Boaz. Naomi hears that Nemuel is plotting to get Ruth out of the way and hurriedly employs her own plan to force Boaz’s hand and get him to become betrothed to Ruth. Nemuel kidnaps Ruth on her way back from the scene of Boaz’s proposal and sells her off in slavery. His treachery is exposed at a meeting of town elders which Boaz has arranged in order to ‘call Nemuel’s bluff’ and get him to cede his right, as closest relative, to be the kinsman redeemer. Struggles and chase scenes ensue, culminating in Ruth’s rescue and marriage to Boaz.  Based on the Book of Ruth from Jewish and Christian scripture.
