Synopsis

In a mainstream high school, the students with physical challenges perform a play that highlights their limitations rather than their inner selves. The girl with quadriplegia enlists the help of the social worker to mount a more honest, realistic production. His efforts meet with resistance from an overburdened or skeptical staff. His encounters with the children reveal their insecurities as they each sing of the self no one sees. In the process, they also show that, despite their similar conditions, they have distinctly unique approaches to life’s challenges: an inventor, a poet, a care-taker, a rebel, an accommodator, and a creative observer. Conflict among the children ensues, threatening the process. Paradoxically, that conflict results in an alliance between the most aggressive and the most passive student, as they come to realize that they both have the same need to be heard and understood by the school staff. The students unite to create an original play that dramatizes their individual strengths as well as the power of the group.

SETTING:   A regular education High School, which includes a classroom for students with physical disabilities.
