Synopsis

This is a very “energetic” musical.

In Abilene, West Texas, U.S. Supreme Court Judge “TEX” inspires the Abilene Civic Theatre to dress in “drag” to sing and dance an “ABILENE INDEPENDENCE SHOW” this upcoming New Years’ Day.

But the psychotic Theatre Chaplain BILLY WISDOM calls on the “New York Ghost of All Times” to blow them up whenever they sing and dance!

The LADIES decide to “love their man” in song and dance, and TEX comically proposes to ROSIE, with whom HE’S in love. CHAPLAIN WISDOM proposes to Psychiatrist BRANDY MAE, and businessman DAVID proposes to VIRGE (who doesn’t talk, only makes animal sounds and sings and dances).

The Big Night arrives, and CHAPLAIN WISDOM pulls a gun on everyone, forcing them to sing and dance.  THUNDER. FLASHING LIGHTS.  The CAST collapses, dead, onstage, dragged off by STAGE HANDS.  CURTAIN.  INTERMISSION.

After the CURTAIN rises for Act II, the “New York Ghost of All Times” (an OFFSTAGE VOICE) musically resurrects the CAST.  JUSTICE OF THE PEACE JOHN SMITH says that some “rich New Yorkers are putting on a Broadway show that calls for Abilenians!!”  Everyone is “independent,” in Abilene now (and they have made Broadway!).

CHAPLAIN WISDOM has another psychiatric session, discussing “independence,” and, in II.3., TEX electronically tells the “whole country” that we need the “music of the people.”

In II.4., the MEN (on one side of the STAGE) musically propose to the LADIES, WHO (with a butterfly net) chase the MEN around onstage, and optionally through the AUDIENCE, on out the back door of the Theatre.

In II.5., there is a two-sentence Wedding Ceremony for all 4 LOVE COUPLES, performed by JUSTICE SMITH.

The CAST sings and dances the Reprises at the end of the show.
